The first days of the Beijing Olympic Games have been unfortunate for Russian athletes: first, both male and female handball teams lose, then water polo girls strike one ball less then their rivals. The volleyball women team lose, surprisingly, two games.
The struggle for medals has also been disappointing. Trap shooter Alexei Alipov took bronze and his fellow Lyubov Galkina won silver, but claimed she was at her "limit". Divers Yulia Pakhalina and Anastasia Pozdnyakova took the silver in the women's synchronized 3 meter springboard event, but they had done their best, and their silver is a success.
Other members of Russia's Olympic team were also striving for success - volleyballers, tennis and basketball men, the latter winning over Iran.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, no. 1 of Russian female tennis players, was supposed to play Chinese Li on Sunday, but the game was called of due to heavy rain that had flooded the courts ten minutes before the game was supposed to begin.
