The Severstal-avto company has announced it will begin producing Fiat Ducato commercial cars in Russia on December 21st. The vans will be assembled in the Alabuga free economic zone in the Republic of Tatarstan.
Initial cost of the automobile, which will be available in 14 basic modofications, is estimated at $ 18 000. Severstal plans to produce 10 000 Ducatos in 2008, and by 2012 Alabuga’s production capacity is expected to rise to 75 000 cars a year.
Severstal’s management thinks Fiat Ducato’s main competitive advantage will be its low owning cost. Exploitation of the vehicle is 35 % cheaper than that of its Russian analogues, and 20 % cheaper than owning cost of imported commercial cars.
